A Dedication to a Friend

This is slightly off the Parkinson’s disease topic, but I would like to dedicate a part of my blog to a dear friend who has been an integral part of my journey for the last four years.

I believe a good friend should be appreciated and that appreciation should be expressed. So I have decided to write this dedication to tell my best friend how much I appreciate her.

Before we met, I was deep within my chaos and going through a terrible time in my life. She managed to change all that with just her friendship.

We met in 2011, soon after my deep brain stimulation surgery, and we clicked right away. She often comes over and works with me. We have spent a lot of time working on new miniature projects and when they didn’t work out we would just laugh and put it down to experience.

We laugh a LOT! We don’t only share our good times, but our bad times too and we are always there for each other no matter what.

We don’t live in each other’s pockets though. There are times when weeks go by where we don’t see each other or speak to each other. But when we do speak again, it’s as though we are just picking up from where we left off.

She is the essence of what a good friend is, thoughtful, honest, trustworthy, professional in her job, reliable, yet imperfect, with a wicked sense of humor. If there is something on her mind she says so, and I respect her so much for that. She leaves me with no bad feelings when she does so, she just says whatever needs to be said.

I never think about my Parkinson’s when I’m with her, she accepts me warts and all. I feel totally comfortable and at ease in her and her boyfriend’s company.

I forget I have anything wrong with me and it’s a wonderful place to be during these times. What more could you ask for in a friend? They say you can pick your friends, but not your family - given a choice I choose her. I think she came into my life to save my sanity.

Thank you for being there for me when I needed it most.

If you have a friend, tell him or her how much you appreciate them, and be grateful for their friendship. I am.
